Getting started
- Agree.Read the Privacy policy and Terms, tick that you are 18 or older, and tap Agree. Nothing is asked for before this.
- Tell it your name.Type your first name for the greeting at the top of the app, or skip. You can change it later in My details.
- Allow what you want.A screen explains bank messages and notifications. Tap Allow for each, then Android asks. You can skip either and allow it later in More > Settings and security.
- Wait for the first scan.A progress bar goes through your SMS inbox on the phone and shows the transactions found. At 100% the app opens with everything in place. Tap Skip to open at once; the rest is read in the background.
The app works on the messages already on your phone, so it is useful from the first minute. Nothing is uploaded.
Using it every day
- Trans. lists your transactions. Change the view (day, calendar, month, totals), search, or tap one to change its category, add a note or attach a receipt.
- Stats shows where the money went and where it came from, with a chart of the period.
- Accounts shows your bank accounts, credit cards, EMIs and loans, with the figure that matters first.
- More holds everything else: Sync, budgets and planning, Ask about your money, Paste and fill, Settings and security, Export and backup.
- Add a payment yourself: use the add button on Trans. to type it, tap the microphone to say it, or use Paste and fill to paste a message the app did not catch.
- Teach it a category: change a transaction's category and choose to remember it for that merchant.
- Something doubtful? The app does not guess. Doubtful messages wait in a short review list where you confirm, correct or dismiss them.
Cards, bills and EMIs
- Open Accounts and the Cards tab. Each credit card shows its bill in a box: red while it is to be paid, amber once part is paid, green when it is paid.
- You are told when a bill is generated, reminded a few days before it is due and again on the due day, and the reminders stop once you pay from anywhere.
- Add a card by scanning it with the camera or tapping it on the phone (NFC). Only the number, expiry and name are read, never the CVV. Details are shown later only after your fingerprint or PIN.
- EMIs and loans appear on Accounts with what is next, what is left and when each ends. Finished ones move to Completed and are never reminded again.
- A card statement (PDF or e-mailed) fills in the credit limit, bill date and pay-by day. See Statements.
Connect Gmail, step by step PLUS
Connecting Gmail is optional. It lets the app read your bank e-mails and statement attachments, and learn your cards, loans and EMIs. The app only reads, never sends or deletes mail.
Before you start: use a personal Gmail address. Work or school accounts and accounts with Google's Advanced Protection do not offer app passwords, so they cannot be connected. Your Google account needs 2-Step Verification on; if it is off, Google asks you to turn it on first.
- Open More > Sync and tap Connect Gmail.A short two-step window opens.
- Step 1: make an app password.Tap Choose your account and open Google. Pick the Gmail account. On Google's page type any name (for example "Mail"), tap Create and copy the 16 letters.
- Step 2: paste it.Come back to the app. The Gmail address is filled in for you. Tap Paste from clipboard (or type the 16 letters) and confirm. The app checks it and says Connected.
- Add another address, if you like. You can connect up to three. Tap Connect another Gmail and repeat.
- The app password is not your Gmail password. It is its own 16-letter password, it stays encrypted on your phone, and it can only be used to read mail.
- To stop, tap Disconnect on that address in More > Sync. This deletes the address and its app password from the phone and stops reading its mail. You can also delete the app password on the same Google page.
- If connecting fails: check that you copied all 16 letters, that 2-Step Verification is on, and that IMAP is on in Gmail settings.
Google sign-in (single sign-on)
Amount Tracker has no sign-in of its own: no account, no password, no profile with us.
- Gmail is connected with an app password, not with "Sign in with Google". This avoids giving any app broad access to your Google account.
- Google Drive backup is the one place Google sign-in is used. If you turn on the automatic backup, you sign in with your Google account once so the app can write an encrypted backup to a hidden folder of your own Drive that only this app can see.
- Signing out or turning backup off stops it. Nothing else about your account is used.
Sync: what it does and how to use it PLUS
More > Sync is the one place for everything that brings data in.
- Sync now does it all in one go: new bank messages, Gmail (transactions, statement files from any bank, loan documents), statements that were locked, and a tidy-up.
- Automatic: bank messages and payment-app alerts arrive by themselves. Gmail is checked about every 6 hours (the last 7 days), with a deeper look about once a month (the last 45 days). Sync now looks back 90 days. Android may delay the automatic check to save battery.
- The first time you connect Gmail, the app reads about 200 days of bank mail, and takes a one-time look back, up to five years, through statements and loan papers for your cards, loans and EMIs. That look adds no transactions.
- The switch at the top pauses everything without disconnecting Gmail.
- Status and history show when each part last ran, what it read, and when the next full look is due. A count of 0 usually means nothing new arrived, not that something is broken.
- Locked statements that need a password wait in a list until you give the password.
Statements
- Open Accounts and tap Add statements, or share a file to the app from another app (a PDF viewer, Files, Gmail or WhatsApp). Choose a PDF, Excel or CSV statement. It is read on the phone.
- A bank account statement adds the transactions it holds, without duplicating ones the app already has. A card statement fills in the limit, bill date and pay-by day.
- A password-protected PDF opens with details you saved in Settings (such as name, date of birth or mobile number). Passwords that worked are remembered, encrypted on the phone.
- If a statement cannot be placed, it waits in a "needs your help" list with the reason, so you can pick its account or card.
Backup and a new phone
- Export (free, always): More > Export and backup saves all your data to a file you choose.
- Automatic backup to Google Drive PLUS: sign in with Google once, choose daily, weekly or monthly, and the newest five encrypted copies are kept in a hidden folder of your Drive. Save the recovery code the app shows you.
- New phone: install the app, then restore from the file or from your Drive backup. A wrong key or a damaged file is refused before anything changes.
- Card numbers, expiry dates, CVVs and bank account numbers are never part of a backup.
- Delete all my data (More > Settings and security) erases everything on the phone, after two confirmations. Backups in your Drive and files you exported are not touched.
Plus and the free trial
- Most of the app is free. The Plus pages show a PLUS tag.
- Tap Start free trial (on More, in the pop-up, or on a Plus page) to begin your 21 days. It starts only when you tap, and nothing is charged.
- A red line at the top of every page shows how many days are left.
- When it ends, Plus pages show lightly blurred with a note to choose a plan. Choose monthly, quarterly or yearly through Google Play, and cancel any time in Google Play.
- You can turn off the plan suggestions in More > Settings and security.
If something looks wrong
- No transactions appear: open More > Settings and security and check that reading bank messages is allowed. Bank messages sent before the app was installed are picked up by the first scan.
- A bank's message is not recognised: check the review list, or use Paste and fill to add it. It will be remembered as you teach it.
- A balance or bill looks off: the app uses what your bank sends. Check it against your statement, and use the card page to see where the figure comes from.
- Reminders do not arrive: allow notifications, and set the app's battery option to Unrestricted so the phone does not delay them.
- Gmail will not connect: see Connect Gmail: all 16 letters, 2-Step Verification on, IMAP on, and a personal Gmail address.
- Anything else: see the FAQ, or write to amounttracker@gmail.com (also on the Contact page). Say what happened and which version of the app you use.
